A detailed description of, and the criteria for, all the awards and ribbons passed would fill a book, and rightly so. In this article I will discuss only the six major service awards given since World War I. Where I refer to an award below as an award, that is the official name of the award, but I will be referring to the ribbon worn on the left breast of our uniform .
Service ribbons, or ribbon bars, are small, usually colored rayon threads attached to metal studs with fasteners, and are often provided to be worn in lieu of awards. Each national government has its own rules about when ribbons can be worn, and in what order. This is defined in a legal document and is called a "preliminary order".

The World War I Victory Medal was awarded for meritorious service on active duty anytime between April 6, 1917, and Nov. 11 1918. The ribbon is a beautiful rainbow colored medallion. It is not, by definition, a service ribbon but is the first awarded to all employees. Unfortunately, there are no more American military veterans left in "The Great War," or, "The War to End All Wars."
The American Campaign Medal was established in 1942 and designates service between December 7, 1941, and March 2, 1946, or anyone awarded the combat decoration while engaged in combat with the enemy. The ACM defines "Service outside the US in the American Theater of Operations." Although the American Defense Medal ranks first in the ACM, it covers only the two-year period from 1939 to December 7, 1941, and is "For active duty during a national emergency and limited prior to World War II."
The Korean Service Medal was awarded for participation in military activities in the Korean area between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954. The required service was one day or more in that area. selected while working or serving in an organization or on a naval vessel engaged in combat operations or directly supporting combat operations.
The conditions for the Vietnam Service Medal are, service in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand during July 3, 1965, to March 28, 1973. It is awarded to all members of the Army who served in Vietnam and surrounding waters. direct operational support in Vietnam. Individuals serving in three other countries supporting operations in Vietnam at the same time are also eligible.

The Global War on Terrorism Service Award was established in 2004 and is awarded for participation in, or service in support of, operations related to the Global War on Terrorism between September 11, 2001, with a date to be determined later. Eligible Servicemembers must be assigned, attached or mustered to a participating unit, or direct action support service for 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days.
Many people see ribbons on uniforms as a bunch of meaningless colors. Veterans know this and forgive ignorance. What they really are is the lineage of the wearer. Active soldiers and veterans may not know the meaning of all the ribbons (there are about 100) but they recognize and honor a veteran who wears special awards such as the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Navy Cross and, with some honors, the Medal of Honor.
The Fenton History Center is seeking donations for the final four ribbons; Korea, Vietnam, Southwest Asia and the Global War on Terror to add to the collection. It's great to hear stories related to the time served by local Veterans. Please contact the Fenton History Center collection staff to make your donation.
